How to clean a wooden table?

There are several solutions for cleaning and maintaining a wooden table. We offer HG furniture restorers and HG furniture oil — effective products for removing stains, water marks and scratches, and for nourishing and protecting the wood. There are also practical methods, such as using a well-wrung damp cloth with mild soap. It is important to avoid aggressive cleaners, abrasive products and excessive water, as these can damage the wood. Always choose products specially developed for cleaning and maintaining wooden surfaces for the best results. Always check the manufacturer's care instructions beforehand.

HG solutions for cleaning a wooden table

To maintain and restore your wooden table, we offer the following products:

  • HG furniture restorer for dark wood: A high-quality maintenance product for stained, lacquered, oiled, untreated or waxed furniture made from dark wood types. Stubborn stains, water marks and alcohol rings disappear, dull and faded surfaces regain their natural colour, and scratches are concealed. Apply generously in straight lines along the grain and allow 6–10 hours to work. Not suitable for bleached or light wood types.
  • HG furniture restorer for light wood: The same high-quality maintenance product, specially designed for lighter wood types such as pine. It restores stains, water marks and faded surfaces, and conceals scratches. Apply generously along the grain and allow 6–10 hours to work.
  • After treatment, you can nourish and protect your table with HG furniture oil. This product is specially developed for lacquered and un-lacquered wood and ensures your furniture stays in good condition with regular use. Shake before use, apply thinly with a lint-free cloth and rub in completely straight away.

Solutions for cleaning a wooden table top

Cleaning a wooden table top requires the right approach and products to prevent damage. While professional products are preferable, there are some practical methods you can try. Bear in mind that these methods will not always deliver the desired results and may carry risks.

  • Mix one part mild soap with 10 parts warm water and gently clean the table top with a well-wrung soft cloth. Then wipe the surface with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue and dry thoroughly.
  • Use a well-wrung microfibre cloth dampened with lukewarm water for daily cleaning of the table top. This removes surface dirt without damaging the wood or adding excessive moisture.
  • For stubborn stains, gently apply a small amount of washing-up liquid to a soft cloth and rub lightly over the stain. Then wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth and dry it immediately.

Avoid using aggressive cleaners, abrasive products or excessive water, as these can damage the wood. If in doubt, we recommend using HG furniture restorer for dark wood or HG furniture restorer for light wood, which are specially developed for maintaining wooden surfaces.

Why wooden table tops get damaged by the wrong cleaning products

There are several reasons why a wooden table top can be damaged by using the wrong cleaning products:

  • Some cleaning products contain aggressive chemicals that can damage the wood's finish, causing it to lose its shine and develop dull patches.
  • Certain products, such as bleach or abrasive cleaners, can cause scratches on the table top.
  • Using too much water during cleaning can lead to moisture damage, which may cause the wood to warp or crack.
  • Some oils or waxes not specifically designed for wooden surfaces can leave stains or sticky residue.

To prevent damage to your wooden table top, it is important to only use cleaning products specially developed for wood. Avoid aggressive chemicals, abrasive products and excessive water. Always read the instructions on the cleaning product label and test it first on an inconspicuous spot before using it on the entire table top. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional treatment with a suitable maintenance product will help keep your wooden table in good condition for years to come.
