Solutions for cleaning and maintaining an oiled wooden floor

For cleaning and mopping an oiled wooden floor, there are some home remedies you can try, although these are not always the most effective or safest option. Here are some suggestions:

  • Use lukewarm water with mild, pH-neutral soap, such as Marseille soap or Castile soap. Wring out the mop thoroughly and avoid using excessive water on the floor.
  • Add a small amount of natural soap to a bucket of water and mop the floor gently. Make sure you do not make the floor too wet.
  • Make a mixture of one part white vinegar and nine parts water. Use this mixture sparingly and ensure the floor dries quickly to prevent damage to the oil layer.

It is advisable not to mop an oiled floor too often — at most once a week, or less frequently depending on how soiled it is. While these home remedies can work, they may not provide the best protection for your floor and could cause damage in the long term. For optimum results and to extend the lifespan of your oiled wooden floor, it is recommended to use specially developed cleaning and maintenance products according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Causes of problems when cleaning an oiled wooden floor

Cleaning an oiled wooden floor can sometimes cause problems. Here are some common causes:

  • Use of incorrect cleaning products, such as aggressive or overly soapy products, which can damage the oil layer and make the floor appear dull.
  • Mopping too frequently, which causes the oil layer to wear faster and the floor to lose its protection.
  • Using too much water when mopping, which can lead to stains, warping or damage to the wood.
  • The floor not drying properly after mopping, which leaves moisture behind and can damage the floor.

To prevent these problems in future, we recommend the following:

  • Use cleaning products specially developed for oiled wooden floors or a pH-neutral floor soap.
  • Do not mop the floor more than once every two weeks, unless absolutely necessary.
  • Use as little water as possible when mopping and wring out the mop thoroughly.
  • Ensure the floor is completely dry after mopping to prevent moisture damage.
