What is grout cleaner?
Grout cleaner is a specialised product designed to thoroughly clean grout lines between tiles and bricks. It removes stubborn dirt and dust that can build up in grout over time. HG offers various effective solutions, including a concentrate, ready-to-use cleaner and a power gel brush for precise application. There are also household alternatives, such as cleaning vinegar, hydrogen peroxide or lemon juice, although these are often less powerful than professional grout cleaners. With regular maintenance and preventative measures—such as good ventilation and drying surfaces—you can prevent grout from becoming soiled.
HG solutions for cleaning grout
To effectively clean grout, we offer several HG products:
- HG grout cleaner concentrate: This product is highly effective for removing stubborn dirt from grout on floors and walls, for example in the bathroom, toilet or kitchen. The concentrate delivers thorough cleaning and is economical in use.
- HG grout cleaner: If you prefer a ready-to-use solution, this product is an excellent choice. It removes heavy soiling from virtually all grout lines between tiles and bricks and continues to work during the contact time for optimal results.
- HG Power gel brush grout cleaner: For precise and targeted cleaning, this product is ideal. The strongly adhesive gel formula, combined with the integrated brush, makes it easy to remove stubborn dirt from grout lines.
If yellow or brown limescale deposits remain after cleaning, we recommend treating these areas with HG limescale remover concentrate (1L). For more information and additional advice, see our guide on how to clean grout.
General solutions for cleaning grout
If you are looking for ways to clean grout without using professional products, there are some household methods you can try. Bear in mind that these are not always as effective as specially developed cleaners and may not be suitable for all types of grout.
- Make a paste from water and baking soda and apply it to the grout. Leave it to work for a few minutes, then brush thoroughly. Rinse well afterwards.
- Mix equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide. Apply this solution to the grout, leave it to work briefly and then scrub with a brush. Thorough rinsing is important.
- Lemon juice can also be used. Mix the juice of a lemon with water, apply it to the grout and leave it to work for a few minutes. Then brush and rinse thoroughly.
Whilst these methods may help, they are generally less powerful than specially developed grout cleaners. Always test first on an inconspicuous area. If these methods do not provide the desired result, a professional grout cleaner is often the better option.
Causes of soiled grout
Grout can become soiled for a variety of reasons:
- Moisture and mould growth: Damp areas such as bathrooms and kitchens are prone to mould, which can discolour grout.
- Limescale deposits: In hard water areas, mineral deposits can make grout appear dirty or yellowed.
- Dirt and dust: Everyday use leads to a build-up of particles in grout lines.
- Ageing: Over time, grout can discolour due to wear and environmental exposure.
To help prevent grout from becoming soiled, clean regularly with a suitable grout cleaner, ensure good ventilation and dry surfaces after use. In hard water areas, a water softener can help reduce limescale deposits. By taking these preventative measures, you'll keep your grout cleaner and fresher for longer. Always check the manufacturer's maintenance instructions before you begin. Regular maintenance not only preserves the appearance of your grout but also extends its lifespan and maintains the overall hygiene of your tiled surfaces.
