How to clean brown grout?
Brown grout can be cleaned effectively using specialist HG products. These products remove stubborn dirt from grout lines on both floors and walls. Dilute the concentrate with water, apply it, allow it to work and then scrub for the best results. Household remedies such as a mixture of vinegar and water or a paste of hydrogen peroxide and salt can also be used, although they do not always guarantee results. To prevent grout from turning brown again, regular cleaning, good ventilation and, where appropriate, the application of a grout sealant are recommended. Always check the manufacturer's maintenance instructions beforehand.
HG solutions for cleaning brown grout
For cleaning brown grout effectively, we offer the following solutions:
- HG grout cleaner concentrate: This powerful product removes heavy soiling from grout lines on floors and walls in bathrooms, toilets and kitchens. Dilute the concentrate 1:4 with lukewarm water, apply with a stiff brush or hand brush, allow it to work for a while and then scrub. Rinse thoroughly with water for the best results.
- HG grout cleaner ready-to-use: This ready-mixed solution is ideal for removing stubborn dirt from virtually all grout lines between tiles and brickwork. Spray the product onto the grout, leave it to work for a few minutes, brush and remove loosened dirt with clean, lukewarm water.
- HG Power gel brush grout cleaner: The powerful gel formula adheres strongly to grout and can be applied precisely using the integrated brush. After approximately 30 minutes, remove with a damp cloth and rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
If yellow or brown stains remain after cleaning, this is often caused by limescale deposits. In that case, we recommend HG limescale remover concentrate (1L). For grout that has turned black due to mould, we recommend using HG mould spray.

Solutions for cleaning brown grout
Brown grout is a common issue caused by moisture, mould and accumulated dirt. In addition to professional products, there are also some household remedies you can try. Bear in mind that these methods do not always deliver the desired result and can occasionally carry risks:
- Mix equal parts water and white vinegar and apply to the grout using a spray bottle. Leave the mixture to work and clean the grout with an old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly with water.
- Make a paste from hydrogen peroxide and a mild abrasive such as baking soda. Apply the paste to the grout, leave it to work for approximately 30 minutes and scrub clean. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
- Use a steam cleaner to loosen dirt and mould. Direct the steam onto the grout, brush if necessary and rinse with water.
While these solutions can help, results are not guaranteed. If in doubt, choose a specialist HG cleaning product.
Causes of brown grout
Grout can turn brown for a number of reasons:
- Moisture: Leads to mould growth and discolouration.
- Dirt and dust: Build up over time in grout lines.
- Soap and limescale residue: Can adhere to grout and cause staining.
- Ageing: Natural wear leads to discolouration.
To help prevent brown grout, clean regularly, ensure good ventilation and consider applying a grout sealant. By taking these preventive measures, you can extend the life of your grout and maintain its appearance. Regular maintenance with suitable cleaning products will keep your grout looking fresh and hygienic for longer periods.
