Alternative cleaning methods for bathroom tiles
Whilst household remedies can sometimes work, they are not always the safest or most effective option. These methods may carry risks and do not always achieve the desired result:
- A mixture of white vinegar and water can help, but vinegar can damage certain tile types. Always test first on an inconspicuous area.
- Warm water with washing-up liquid can remove light soiling, but is not strong enough for stubborn dirt and limescale.
- Lemon juice may help reduce limescale, but does not offer the cleaning power of a specialist tile cleaner.
- A paste of hydrogen peroxide and scouring powder can remove stains, but may dull the tile surface and damage grout if used incorrectly.
If you are unsure, we recommend using a specialist tile cleaner. Our HG products are designed for optimal results without damaging your tiles. Always check the tile manufacturer's care instructions before using a new product.
Causes of soiling on bathroom tiles
Bathroom tiles can lose their shine and become dirty due to several factors:
- Limescale: Hard water causes deposits to form, resulting in dull, streaky tiles.
- Soap residue: Soap, shampoo and shower gel can leave a sticky film.
- Mould and mildew: Moisture encourages mould growth, especially in grout lines.
- Dirt and dust: Daily use leads to a build-up of dirt, dust and skin particles.
To help prevent these issues, we recommend:
- Dry tiles after each shower using a squeegee or towel to minimise limescale and soap residue.
- Ensure good ventilation to reduce moisture and prevent mould growth.
- Clean regularly with suitable HG products.
- Consider a water softener if you live in a hard water area to reduce limescale caused by hard water.
