How to clean gold? Let your gold shine again with these tips

Dirt and damage mean that gold jewellery can lose its shine over time. Sometimes, a black layer is formed on the gold. This black layer is caused by sulphur from the air. Gold is a precious metal, be extra careful with cleaning your jewellery.

1. Mix some soft household soap and lukewarm water.

2. Washing-up liquid

A diamond can become dull over time due to skin grease, soap and cream. This is how you clean your gold jewellery with diamonds in 4 steps:  

1. Mix some washing-up liquid and warm water.
2. Put the item of jewellery in the water and brush it carefully with a soft toothbrush.
3. Put the item of jewellery in a colander and rinse with lukewarm running water. 
4. Leave the jewellery to dry properly by dabbing it with a soft, lint-free cloth.  

3. Effervescent tablet

An effervescent cleaning tablet for dentures makes the diamonds of a gold ring shine again. This is how you clean gold with an effervescent tablet:

1. Fill a glass with water and add one effervescent tablet. 
2. Put the gold in the water for 5 minutes. 
3. Check the item of jewellery from time to time. 
4. Remove the gold from the water. 
5. Put the item of gold jewellery in a fine sieve and rinse. 
6. Polish the gold gently with a soft, lint-free cloth.
